What's Moissanite

Moissanite Story

In a vast tract of pine forest in central North Carolina lies Research Triangle Park, founded in the late 50’s by state and local governments, world-renowned universities, and private businesses. It is home to over 200 firms engaged in some of the most significant scientific research and development in the world. Out of this hotbed of innovation there emerged a new kind of company, one that blended science, commerce, and ingenuity. After years of experimentation, certain researchers in RTP perfected and patented a process for creating pure silicon carbide (SiC) – a long-sought-after breakthrough which made possible significant advances in the development of diverse products that included semiconductors, LED lighting, and extremely hard drilling tools and abrasives. Some of those same researchers recognized the potential for marketing this pure silicon carbide as a new and unique type of gemstone. Its hardness rivaled that of any mineral on Earth, and its refractive properties exceeded that of diamond. Here was a new type of gemstone, and Moissanitee® delivered it to a world yearning for elegant jewelry which was free of environmental and ethical issues. To finally perfect the process of creating pure silicon carbide was a supreme achievement. This elemental material is so rare in nature that even locating enough to test was a monumental challenge. But with the advent of Moissanitee® Created Moissanite, that barrier to progress has been overcome. Today we continue to pursue further refinements of this unprecedented gem. With ongoing innovation in research, perceptive consumer outreach, and inventive channel marketing, Moissanitee® continues to bring about change to the jewelry Industry with its fresh ideas and forward-thinking insights.

Moissanite VS Diamond

How do Moissanite and Diamond compare? Both are natural occuring minerals evolving under heat and pressure in the earth's core. Both gemstones can now be lab created for a conflict free footprint. Moissanite gemstones are sometimes tagged as diamond simulants, but we regard them as a diamond alternatives, and here’s why:

Moissanite is completely different in comparison to a diamond simulant like Cubic Zirconia, CZ stones are not durable, they are a porous stone that will scratch, change colour, chip and cloud.
Moissanite is a gem very similar to diamond in terms of appearance and physical elements. It is difficult to distinguish the two with naked eye. However, its market price is only 1/10 of diamond.

In that way, moissanite gemstones are the second hardest gemstone used in jewellery making today, it's durable for everyday wear, high clarity, ideals cuts and preferred colour grades. DEF Colourless and GHI Near Colourless. Moissanites are guaranteed to maintain their brilliance for a lifetime. Moissanite is widely recognized as an excellent diamond alternative gemstone, it has been used in the jewellery market for well over ten years. It has gained more popularity among millennials and diamond alternative brides over the last 5 years, and continue to be deemed the number one diamond alternative chosen by our brides.

Moissanite gemstones are superior to diamond by way of refraction. Revealing an even more appealing sparkle factor. Moissanite are also more affordable than diamonds, allowing one to create an out of world piece of jewelry without an out of this world budget!

A diamond’s price and value is dependent on its 4 C’s Carat, Cut, Clarity Colour. These elements work together to form the beauty and brilliance of the stone, because diamonds are mostly natural rather than artificial, they can vary hugely in price, value and quality.
Moissanites will be lower in cost and a consistent grading scale for the 4 C’s. Moissanite is lab created, and we can consistently produce the same grade of stones for all of our gemstones. These are offered at a simplified scale of Colour DEF, Clarity VVS, Cut Very Good
Following the 4C scale in diamond can be overwhelming, confusing, and complex, with hundreds of variations within the scale that will all impact the pricing of that specific gemstone.
While price differs between diamond and moissanite, it’s imperative to realize that the lower priced gemstone does not mean a lesser quality product. Moissanite is a beautiful gemstone all its own that can match the best attributes of some of your other favorite gemstones. They are extremely durable and guaranteed to last forever.

To outline the price difference of moissanite vs. diamond side by side, we’ve compiled the below chart. Prices are estimated and can vary per vendor. With comparable graded stones Carat Weight, DEF Colour Range, VVS Clarity, Very Good Cut.

5 C’S Of Moissanite

1.CUT

A Moissanite gem is precisely calibrated and hand-faceted by master gem cutters to maximize brilliance and spark its ultimate fire that increases the refractive index of moissanite.

Brilliant Cut ~ Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamonds, so the round brilliant cut from LUX Moissanite was developed to maximize moissanites unique fire. Giving you ultimate sparkle.

Hearts & Arrow Cut
~ The Hearts & Arrows cut has always been noted as a desired cut in the jewellery industry. The shapes of hearts & arrows will show arrows on the table (top) and hearts on the pavilion (bottom) of the gemstone, under magnification. This cut will tone down the sparkle that is created with a brilliant cutting style.

2.COLOR

The past two decades have seen ongoing research and development aimed at expanding the color range of Moissanite to meet market demand. Near-colorless is visibly whiter, intensifying each gem’s brilliance and brightness in a broad selection in the G-H-I range. The crowning achievement in gem innovation is the Premium moissanite in an unfailingly pure, white colorless gem in the premium D-E-F range.

3.CLARITY

Moissanite clarity grading is “eye-clean”. Moissanite gems have tiny, needle-like inclusions that invariably develop during the growing process of moissanite. However, only moissanite gemstones that pass our stringent quality standards are made available for distribution.

4.CARAT SIZE

Moissanite is visually proportionate to typical diamond carat weights but is approximately 10% lighter. Most jewelers find it easier to sell moissanite by size rather than weight. A 6.5mm round brilliant natural diamond would have a carat weight of approximately 1.0 compared to a moissanite of the same dimension (6.5mm) which has a carat weight of approximately 0.88. Simply put, to the eye they appear to be the same size, although the weight of the two stones may be slightly different. Like other gems, large sizes of moissanite are rare. However, the premium for large sizes is much less, making moissanite a particularly good choice for bold jewelry designs.
